1955 Topps Baseball Cards

1955 Topps Baseball Cards

This is the smallest Tops baseball card set numerically speaking.1 It might be little but, it's power packed and popular with the collectors though.1 Any set with Rookie cards for future HOF'ers like Roberto Clemente, Sandy Koufax and Harmon Killebrew is bound to be something special.1 You won't find a card for the likes of Roy Campanella or the Mick though because they were still tied to Bowman at the time.1This would be the last year that would happen, since Topps bought out Bowman later in the year after the set was issued.
This is also the first Topps set to use a horizontal layout.1

The rest of the design of the cards was fairly classic though.1 The 1954 set looked very similar and some of the same photos were used for certain player sin both the 1954 and 1955 sets.1 The colored background was a little bit different and featured a little bit more of a faded tint.1 The set featured the second year of card fronts with both an action shot and a face shot and this year both of them were in color.1

The front also includes the name of the player, their field position. And the now familiar faux autograph stamp along with the team logo.

On the back of the cards were the normal bio and stats info and a short write-up about the player.1 The backs also feature a cartoon panel which contained a trivia question.1 At the bottom on the back, was a stats table showing the player's career averages.

No one knows for sure why this set was so small.1 One theory is that Topps wanted to hold some cards back to use in the upcoming Double Headers set that it printed later in the year.1 This is probably not the case though, because all the players featured in the double headers set also have cards in the regular 1955 set.1

Another factor that contributed to the small size of the set was the fact that a fair number of players switched contracts and went to Bowman.1 The series does have some scarce high number cards beginning with #161.
